ABERDEEN
- A graveside service for James (Jimmy) C. Garrett, 80, who died
Saturday, January 7th at The Homeplace in Saltillo, will be held
at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 10th at Odd Fellows Cemetery in
Greenwood, Mississippi with Minister Tommy Kelly officiating.
Mr. Garrett was born in Arkansas to Burton and Nova Duncan Garrett. In
1948, at the age of 17, Mr. Garrett went to work at the Federal
Warehouse in Dell, Arkansas. He was drafted into the U.S. Army
and served in the Korean War as a medic. After the war, he moved
to Hobbs, New Mexico to work in the oil fields for two years. He
then lived in Blytheville, Arkansas, where he was employed by
the police department. He moved to Itta Bena, Mississippi to
manage their cotton compress. In 1979, he joined the staff of
Staplcotn Company in Greenwood, Mississippi. After 17 years he
retired from his position as vice president of the warehouse
division in March 1996. He was recognized by the directors and
officers of Stalcotn Cotton Cooperative Association for all of
his efforts on behalf of Staplcotn and the cotton industry.
He enjoyed his retirement at his home at Lake Enis before moving to
Aberdeen in 2005 to be near his only brother. The past three
years he resided at The Homeplace in Saltillo, where he was
lovingly cared for. His family is grateful for the care given by
North Mississippi Hospice. Although for years he was unable to
speak, he could still produce that killer smile. Jimmy enjoyed
family, fishing, golf and cooking outdoors.
He leaves two daughters, Rita Lanning and husband, Gene of Denton, Texas
and Stephanie Garrett of Greenwood; a son, Dr. Randy Garrett and
wife, Renee of Clifton, Virginia; a step daughter, Margaret
Elise Putman of Humble, Texas; two step sons, Dr. Wesley
Clemments of Brandon, Mississippi and Robert Clemments of
Atokia, Tennessee; a brother, Jerry M. Garrett and wife, Sharon
of Aberdeen; his mother-in-law, Maggie Brownlow of Carrolton,
Mississippi; his sister-in-law, Aileen Sanders and husband,
Raymond of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Joel, Stacy and
Nathan Garrett, Kara and Wade Lanning, Sara Beth and Blain
Clark; two nieces and one great niece, and his close friend and
business associate, Jack Traynham of Greenville, South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, former wives, Louise Howard
Garrett, Beulah Hawkins Garrett and Margaret Brownlow Garrett
and cousin, Henry Gosa.
